They had been touched upon some centuries earlier by the Norsemen, but the knowledge had been lost or relegated to legends until the Genoese explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus brought back his momentous news to the court of Spain. After 1493 America impinged irresistibly upon the European mind. The circle of the known world was broken; beyond the Atlantic lay immense new lands, untold wealth and natural abundance, unlimited possibilities. Here, in over 200 rare woodcuts and engravings, contemporary prints, tracts and other illustrations, is the way the New World looked to the men who first set eyes upon it. They reflect all the wonder and astonished excitement of the times~not to mention its boisterousness, credulity and sometimes cruelty and greed. Designed to feed an insatiable European hunger for news of the fabulous discoveries in the West, they remain for all time a fascinating pictorial record of a remarkable era. Among the prints collected here are some of the first views of the new land ever published, rare early scenes of landings and discoveries, in the Caribbean, Brazil, Virginia, Canada. And along with the depictions of the land go the amazed views of Indian settlements, and the first villages and towns, from Valparaiso to Quebec, Mexico City to Fort Nieuw Amsterdam~offering an unprecedented glimpse of the primitive beginnings of our swarming cities of today. To quench the European curiosity about the natives, flora and fauna of the New World, numerous engravings and woodcuts~often embellished by a fanciful and credulous imagination~pictured the Inca, Brazilian, Virginian, Floridian, Huron and other Indians. A number of these prints are reproduced here, as are plates purporting to show such curious animals as the crook~backed ox (buffalo), chinchilla, sloth, armadillo and alligator. Also depicted were such strange, unheard~of plants as tobacco, cotton, maize, the cocoa tree, the peanut, which flourished on these surprising shores. Occupying a special and honored place in the graphics of the New World are the maps, and over 40 of the finest and most beautiful are reproduced here. Included are the Vinland Map, newly~discovered documentation for the Viking landfalls; the map of Toscanelli which Columbus probably used to substantiate his reckless voyage to the West, and which showed Zipangu (Japan) near where America was to be discovered; the Admiral Map, attributed to both Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci; the first maps upon which the name America appeared; maps ornamented by Holbein and Durer; maps by Ortelius, Apianus, Waldseemiiller and other of the finest cartographers of the time~all recording bit by bit the gradual growth of knowledge about the great discovery. Rounded out with striking contemporary portraits of the explorers of the New World, from Columbus and Vespucci to Champlain and Meriwether Lewis, and a selection of the fascinating promotion tracts issued by the Walter Raleigh Company and other enterprises, this is a volum
