[First Edition] A General History of Music

EXTRA POSTAGE ON THIS FOUR VOLUME SET, published between 1776 and 1889, and considered one of the two great eighteenth century English histories of music. It was purchased originally from Heritage Bookshop in Los Angeles and is in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, all volume re-backed with the original spines laid down, presumably by the Heritage Bindery. Some of the plates are by Bartolozzi and the dedicatory epistle is said to be written for Burney by his friend Samuel John. Engraved frontispieces in Volumes I, II & III by F. Bartolozzi after G.B. Cipriani and E.F. Burney, engraved frontispiece portrait in Volume IV by F. Bartolozzi after Sir Joshua Reynolds, and nine additional plates, two of which are folding, one of which is an etching of an Egyptian Musical Instrument, the other a musical sheet of an ancient Hebrew chant. Additional engraved musical illustrations, instruments and musicians throughout text. son. I'll include a photo of the original insert by Heritage so you'll be assured you ar buying a superior copy of this classic.
