[First Edition] 1937 The Tongues of Men by J.R

"Description: A first edition 1937 hardcover from J.R. Firth, the first Professor of Linguistics in Britain and a foundational figure in modern linguistics. Part of the Watts & Co. ""Changing World Library"" series, this early work explores the origins and social role of language, touching on Egyptian and Chinese writing systems, universal-language movements, and the philosophy of speech — a scarce piece of linguistics history complete with its original illustrated dust jacket. Details Author: J. R. Firth Illustrator: Not Stated Publisher: Watts & Co., London Publication Year: 1937 Printed In: Great Britain ISBN: Not present (pre-ISBN edition) Condition: Hardcover in blue cloth boards with the original orange/cream pictorial dust jacket present — genuinely scarce for a book of this age. The jacket shows notable wear consistent with an 89-year-old survivor: chipping and small losses at the spine ends and corners, sunning/toning to the orange panels, a few surface stains, and light edge tears, but it remains complete and displays well. Internally the text block is clean, tight, and unmarked apart from an old bookshop stamp (""The Reader's Corner, Cairo"") and a small pencil price notation on the front free endpaper — nice provenance for a collector. Pages are bright with only minor foxing/spotting to a few leaves. A solid, honest copy of an important early linguistics title, sold with dust jacket intact."
