A standing granite figure of Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩, depicted as a monk with a rounded head and long robes falling to the base. His hands meet before his body around an object whose details have been softened by weathering. The stone has a deeply weathered surface with patches of lichen. Its softened facial features and robe folds give the figure a quiet presence and speak to a long period of outdoor exposure. Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩, affectionately known as Ojizô-sama お地蔵様, is one of the most familiar figures in Japanese Buddhism. He is widely revered as a protector of children, travellers and the deceased, and stone images of Jizô are commonly found along roadsides, in temple grounds and cemeteries throughout Japan. Period: Japan – Edo period (1603–1868). Dimensions: Height 56.5 cm; width 21 cm; depth 19 cm. Weight 29.8 kg. In very good condition, with weathering and lichen consistent with age and outdoor use. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
