FELICITA SARTORI (ITALY 1713-1782). "Allegory of Venice". Etching on laid paper, circa 1740, signed Felicità Sartori sculp. in the plate. Based on a design by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (Italy 1682-1754). I. 41.0 x 28.7 cm; S. 48.0 x 35.3 cm. Nagler 536. Provenance: The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c). Sartori was born in Pordenone and trained as an artist in Venice, joining the household of the popular Venetian portraitist and miniaturist Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) around 1728. She was invited to Dresden around 1741 by August III's counselor Franz Joseph Hoffmann (Germany 1696-1750) and the following year she and Hoffmann were married. After that she settled in Dresden until Hoffmann's death in 1749. In Dresden her artistic popularity grew significantly and she became a highly sought after portraitist and pastellist. Sartori remarried to the nephew of her husband and sometime during the 1750s she returned to Italy and lived in or near Venice.
