Fayetteville, Arkansas. Bank of the State of Arkansas. 1839 $5. PCGS Currency Very Good 10 Apparent. Minor Edge Damage & Stains. No. 996. Plate D. Opened in 1838, the Fayetteville-based branch of the Bank of the State of Arkansas traces a history similar to its contemporaries. Come 1839 the bank suspended specie payments and never recovered as a result. By 1843 the Fayetteville branch was deep in debt and considered a "total loss and complete failure" as described by Whitman Encyclopedia of Obsolete Paper Money Vol. 7 and was liquidated as a result. That same text records issued notes on this bank as great rarities on an individual basis and bidders today certainly have a rare opportunity for their consideration that is not to be missed. PCGS Currency comments "Minor Edge Damage & Stains." Estimate: $200 - $400. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
