Face To Face - Newel Hunter

Face To Face by Newel Hunter Painting 18.0 x 24.0 :: Painted on an 18 x 24 x .25 inch hardboard panel Face-To-Face is a perfect example of Hunter’s fluid and uniquely expressive style -- which so often results in arresting images with a sense of depth and sculptural form. The painting consists of two bold dynamic brushstrokes rendered in black paint against a pristine white background. The larger sweeping stroke curves gracefully showcasing a gradient of shading from dark saturated black to lighter translucent gray tones suggesting a sense of movement and depth. The smaller more fragmented stroke on the left contrasts sharply with jagged edges and a textured appearance that evokes a sense of energy and spontaneity. Together these strokes create a harmonious composition that balances fluidity with tension evoking both strength and delicacy. This piece effectively captures the power of simplicity and minimalism. The contrast between the dense controlled curve and the irregular almost chaotic fragment offers a compelling dialogue within the composition highlighting Hunter’s grasp of balance and negative space. The variation in texture and shading adds a tactile quality that draws the eye and invites prolonged contemplation. The monochrome palette strips the work down to its essential elements allowing the form and motion to take center stage.
