Collectible rug from Ezine in northwest Turkey near the Dardanelles, dating from around 1900. Geometric pattern with Turkmen influences. One of the two rectangles contains in the center a contrasting diamond, a symbol of the yin-yang principle, the complementary masculine and feminine energy. The star also denotes the origin of life. Surrounding it are four T-shaped motifs, representing the four cardinal directions. The blue background usually stands for the heavens, a symbol of the universe. The central motif is surrounded by four dragons in the corners. Dragons are gatekeepers. They keep evil out and let good through. Beautiful, decorative borders. A collectible object for the floor, the wall, or draped over the sofa.
