Extra-Wide Vintage “Trinity” Bangle by Cartier In Tri-Color Gold, 1980s

Cartier’s “Trinity” design is one of the most iconic pieces of jewellery of the 20th century. What began in 1924 as a concept for a ring consisting of three freely moving gold bands in three different gold colors evolved over the decades into one of the most significant designs of the modern era and was later adapted for bangles, necklaces, and earrings. This exceptional Trinity bangle was likely created in the 1980s and came to us from a prominent South German collection. It is signed and numbered and has been preserved in its original Cartier case. With each individual band measuring just under 1.8 centimeters in width, this model is among the rarest variations in the Trinity collection. While most Cartier bangles are significantly narrower, this is a monumental version weighing in at more than 200 grams of gold. The generous, curved gold surfaces give the design an unusual three-dimensionality—such wide versions are extremely rare.. The idea for the Trinity design originated in Paris at Place Vendôme. In 1924, Louis Cartier sketched a ring that, instead of relying on precious gemstones, focused solely on the beauty of gold in different alloy colors and the interplay of three interlocking rings. Early on, different meanings were attributed to the three colors of gold—yellow gold as a symbol of fidelity, rose gold for love, and white gold for friendship. Even though this interpretation was added only over time, it contributed significantly to the extraordinary popularity of the Trinity models.
