Remarkable natural rough Sri Lankan crystal, selected for its particularly intense color, transparency, and superb vitreous luster Exceptional natural rough sapphire from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), displaying a remarkable weight of 0.56 carat with dimensions 5 × 3.5 × 3 mm. This specimen immediately stands out for its extremely vivid orange-red coloration, especially spectacular under direct light. The stone shows a beautiful chromatic depth: some areas develop an intense, deep red, while the more transparent parts light up with orange, vermilion red, and scarlet hues. Its generous volume for this type of crystal, combined with good transparency and a very rich natural surface, make it a particularly appealing piece for a collection of sapphires and rough gems from Ceylon. A spectacular color The main appeal of this crystal lies in the intensity of its color. Depending on the orientation of the stone and the lighting, the specimen shifts between a deep red, a flamboyant orange-red, and much brighter scarlet tones. The transparent edges can become almost incandescent when light passes through the crystal. This variation is not uniform: the color seems to concentrate differently through the thickness of the material, producing a remarkable sense of depth. The contrast between deep red zones and bright orange parts gives the specimen a very strong visual personality. Very beautiful transparency The crystal presents significant transparent to translucent zones. In several areas, light penetrates deeply into the stone, revealing its internal structures and greatly enhancing the intensity of its color. Some edges appear particularly clear and luminous. This transparency is a major element of its aesthetics: rather than a purely superficial color, the stone gives the impression of being truly illuminated from within when exposed to an appropriate light source. Vitreous luster and natural surfaces The stone has a very nice vitreous luster, especially evident on its smoothest surfaces. Its rough morphology shows a fascinating succession of irregular surfaces, natural reliefs, and shinier areas. Under magnification, this architecture becomes spectacular: each change in orientation alters the way light is reflected or transmitted through the crystal. Some areas produce powerful nearly-white reflections that strongly contrast with the red-orange saturation of the material. The stone intentionally does not have the geometric appearance of a faceted gem: its interest lies precisely in preserving its rough, mineral character. Specimen characteristics Mineral: Natural corundum – Sapphire Origin: Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Weight: 0.56 carat Dimensions: 5 × 3.5 × 3 mm Dominant color: Intense orange-red Hues: Red, scarlet, vermilion and orange depending on lighting Transparency: Transparent to translucent depending on areas Luster: Vitreous and glossy Form: Natural rough crystal Condition: Uncut Quality: Gem-quality Destination: Mineralogical collection / natural gem collection Ceylon: a historic provenance Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, is among the world's most famous historic gem regions. The island is particularly renowned for the diversity of corundums from its deposits. A rough crystal allows appreciating this material in a form very different from sapphires typically encountered in jewelry. Here, the morphology, surface textures, and internal structures remain directly observable. This association of an iconic provenance, a color especially expressive, and a beautiful crystal quality gives the piece clear appeal for the collector. A particularly photogenic specimen At 0.56 carat, this stone also has an interesting weight for a crystal of only a few millimeters. It becomes truly spectacular under magnification. In macro photography or with a loupe, one discovers a crystalline landscape composed of transparent zones, natural reliefs, and countless reflections. Under strong light, the peripheral parts take on blazing orange tones while the heart of the crystal retains deeper red nuances. This contrast creates a remarkable sense of volume. It is thus a piece particularly suited to a collection of natural sapphires, Ceylon corundums, gemstone crystals, or specimens displaying unusual colors. A superb 0.56 carat collection piece, combining an exceptionally intense orange-red coloration, good transparency, powerful vitreous luster, and the incomparable charm of a natural rough crystal from Ceylon.
