Exceptional fossil dragonfly-13 cm wingspan- Wooden...

An impressive and beautifully preserved fossil dragonfly belonging to the extinct genus †Sinaeschnidia, traditionally identified as †Sinaeschnidia cancellosa, elegantly presented in a wooden display frame. The warm tones of the wood, combined with the contrasting light background, beautifully highlight the natural grey stone matrix and the intricate brown fossil. The specimen appears almost suspended within the frame, creating an elegant three-dimensional display that enhances its remarkable visual impact. This carefully presented fossil is not only an intriguing piece of natural history but also a striking decorative object, ready to be displayed in a fossil collection, cabinet of curiosities or sophisticated interior. Originating from the renowned Yixian Formation of China, this remarkable dragonfly dates to the Early Cretaceous, approximately 125 million years ago, and represents part of the extraordinary insect fauna of the Jehol Biota. Exceptional Preservation What makes this specimen particularly desirable is the remarkable preservation of its four wings, together with substantial remains of the body, thorax and abdomen. With an impressive wingspan of approximately 13 cm, the dragonfly displays a striking, almost flight-like appearance against the natural grey stone matrix. The most captivating feature is undoubtedly the intricate fossilised wing venation. A delicate network of branching veins and cross-veins remains clearly visible across the wings, including portions extending towards their outer margins. These fine anatomical structures provide a fascinating view of the wing architecture of this prehistoric insect. Importantly, the wing venation is entirely natural. It has NOT been painted, artificially drawn or enhanced. The visible venation is part of the original fossil preservation, making this specimen particularly interesting from both an aesthetic and palaeontological perspective. The fossil also retains significant anatomical details of the body, including the thoracic region and a substantial portion of the elongated abdomen. Condition and Restoration – Full Transparency During extraction and preparation, the original stone slab fractured into several pieces. These original fragments were subsequently carefully reassembled and glued together. Some portions of the extremely delicate wing margins were lost during this process and remain absent. No missing wing sections have been artificially reconstructed, filled in or painted. The specimen is presented with its natural fossil features preserved and its condition openly disclosed. The fractures and reassembled areas of the matrix can be observed in the photographs, allowing collectors to evaluate the specimen accurately. A Remarkable Collector’s Piece Large fossil dragonflies with extensive wing preservation are particularly appealing to collectors. Their fragile wings are highly susceptible to damage during fossilisation, geological processes, extraction and preparation. Specimens retaining multiple wings together with substantial body remains are especially desirable. This example combines several impressive characteristics: * Approximately 13 cm wingspan * All four wings represented * Beautifully preserved natural wing venation * Substantial preservation of the thorax and abdomen * Attractive natural contrast between the brown fossil and grey matrix * Elegant wooden frame with a contrasting light background * Three-dimensional presentation, ready for display * Transparent disclosure of the slab repairs and missing wing margins Specimen Information Identification: †Sinaeschnidia cancellosa (traditional attribution) Genus: †Sinaeschnidia Geological period: Early Cretaceous Formation: Yixian Formation Origin: China Age: Approximately 125 million years Wingspan: Approximately 13 cm Stone slab dimensions: 17 × 15 cm Presentation: Mounted in a wooden display frame Condition: Original fossil with repaired matrix fractures and some missing wing margins; no artificial reconstruction or painting of the wing venation. An extraordinary combination of prehistoric natural history and elegant presentation, bringing together delicate fossil preservation, impressive dimensions and timeless aesthetic appeal. A dragonfly that once inhabited the ancient landscapes of Cretaceous China, now preserved in stone for approximately 125 million years and beautifully presented for modern collectors.
