All auctions / Ethnographic / Exceptional Devonian Cephalopod Association – 11 cm...

A spectacular and highly unusual Devonian cephalopod association from the famous Hamar Laghdad locality, Tafilalt, Morocco. This impressive natural slab preserves two different types of early Palaeozoic cephalopods together on the same bedding surface: a beautifully preserved, strongly coiled Anetoceras, measuring approximately 11 cm, accompanied by a remarkably long orthoconic nautiloid, measuring approximately 18.5 cm. The orthoconic specimen displays the characteristic elongated, straight-shell morphology and fine longitudinal and transverse ornamentation typical of several Devonian orthoconic cephalopods. The morphology is particularly reminiscent of Spyroceras-type nautiloids, a group documented from Hamar Laghdad and elsewhere in the Tafilalt. The combination of a coiled early ammonoid and a large straight-shelled nautiloid on the same slab makes this a particularly attractive palaeontological specimen. Hamar Laghdad is one of the most important Devonian fossil localities of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas and is exceptionally well known for its extraordinary diversity of cephalopods and other marine organisms. Scientific studies of the locality have documented a remarkably rich Early Devonian cephalopod fauna, including orthoconic forms. The 18.5 cm orthocone is especially impressive in relation to the 20 × 17 cm slab, giving the specimen a strong visual presence. The two contrasting shell morphologies — the tightly coiled Anetoceras and the long, elegant orthocone — create an exceptional snapshot of Early Devonian cephalopod diversity. Locality: Hamar Laghdad, Tafilalt, Anti-Atlas, Morocco Age: Early Devonian Approximate slab size: 20 × 17 cm Anetoceras: approx. 11 cm Orthoconic cephalopod: approx. 18.5 cm Preservation: Natural fossil slab with both specimens preserved in association. A rare and highly decorative scientific specimen, particularly appealing to collectors of Devonian fossils, early ammonoids and orthoconic nautiloids. A truly eye-catching piece from one of the world's classic Devonian fossil localities. Condition: Natural and unrestored
