Ex Typographia Rev. Camerae Apostolicae. - Index Librorum Prohibitorum - 1764

INDEX LIBRORUM PROHIBITORUM SANCTISSIMI DOMINI NOSTRI BENEDICTI XIV PONTIFICIS MAXIMI, jussu recognitus, atque editus. Editio postrema caeteris ornatior cum additamentis. Cum Summi Pontificis Privilegio. Romae, Ex Typographia Rev. Camerae Apostolicae, 1764. The volume opens with a beautiful copper-engraved frontispiece depicting the condemnation and burning of books deemed prohibited, surmounted by papal insignia, followed by the title page with an elegant engraved printer’s mark. The introductory apparatus includes the text by Fr. Thomas Augustinus Ricchinius, of the Order of Preachers and secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Index, which explains the criteria and principles underlying the compilation of the Index. Ricchinius’s role as compiler/curator of the introductory apparatus is confirmed by bibliographic catalogs. The work constitutes a document of particular interest for the history of the Church, of book censorship, of printing and the circulation of ideas in eighteenth-century Europe. The Index collects alphabetically the authors and works prohibited or restricted, directly documenting the ecclesiastical censorship system of the modern age. Format: in-8°. Pages: 232 p. in the bibliographically cataloged edition. Language: Latin. Place and date: Rome, 1764. Printer: Ex Typographia Rev. Camerae Apostolicae. Illustrations: engraved frontispiece and vignette/printer’s mark on the title page. Binding: contemporary binding in cardboard material, with stitching and ancient structure visible; untrimmed copy. State of conservation: copy with evident signs of time and use: widespread browning and foxing, stains, margin browning, abrasions and small marginal losses to the leaves, especially at the edges and corners. Contemporary binding heavily used, with wear, stains and abrasions. The imperfections are to be considered consistent with the age of the artifact. No modern restoration work is evident from the photographs. Note of collectible interest This is a particularly significant document of eighteenth-century book culture: the Index Librorum Prohibitorum represents one of the most important tools by which the Catholic Church regulated for centuries the reading and diffusion of printed works. The Roman edition of 1764 is also catalogued by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and specimens are documented in major bibliographic collections. Brief catalog entry: Rare and interesting eighteenth-century exemplar of the Index of Forbidden Books, Rome 1764, with an engraved frontispiece depicting the burning of books and a printer’s mark on the title page. A work of notable historical and bibliographic interest, especially for the history of ecclesiastical censorship and European eighteenth-century book culture. Attention: I would not describe it simply as “the book of Benedict XIV”: bibliographically it is more correct to attribute it to the Sacred Congregation of the Index, with the introductory apparatus by Thomas Augustinus Ricchinius, published by order of Benedict XIV.
