All auctions / Contemporary Art / European School (XX), signed Carl Weber - Idyllisch landschap bij zonsondergang
This oil on canvas painting shows a vast, rural river landscape bathed in warm evening or early morning light. The water forms the central axis of the composition and reflects the light yellow, pink, and orange tones of the sky. On the right bank stands a small group of cattle in and along the shallow water. On the left, between tall trees and dense vegetation, lies a modest farm or rural building. The scene is constructed in successive planes: the dark, earthy bank and the mirror-like water in the foreground lead to the open meadow and the animals in the middle ground, after which clusters of trees and a low horizon provide further depth. Green and reddish-brown tones in the landscape contrast with the lighter sky and the warm reflections on the water. The work is signed lower right: Carl Weber. Canvas dimensions: 49 × 78 cm. From a private collection. Biografie kunstenaar Carl Weber (1855–1935) was a landscape painter whose oeuvre mainly consists of rural and pastoral scenes. He received a significant portion of his artistic training in Germany and studied at the Munich Art Academy with landscape painter Karl Raupp. Additionally, training is mentioned with Jakob Becker and Johann Eduard von Steinle. Weber painted mainly wooded landscapes, river and meadow views, farms and pastoral scenes with livestock. His compositions align with the 19th-century Romantic landscape tradition, with particular attention to light, atmosphere and the relationship between water, vegetation and open countryside. Weber's work was exhibited, among others, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. In addition to oil paintings, he also produced landscapes in watercolor.
