✦ FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE EU ✦ RATED EXCELLENT This evocative devotional painting depicts the final moments of Saint Francis Xavier (1506–1552), one of the founding members of the Jesuit Order and among the most influential Christian missionaries of the early modern period. A close companion of Ignatius of Loyola, Xavier carried the Catholic faith across India, Southeast Asia, and Japan, becoming a central figure in the global expansion of Christianity during the Age of Exploration. The saint is shown reclining on a rough earthen bed, hands folded in prayer and his gaze uplifted toward a celestial vision. According to tradition, Xavier died on Shangchuan Island off the coast of China while awaiting passage to the mainland, a mission he never fulfilled. The artist transforms this remote and lonely death into a triumphal spiritual event. A cluster of cherubs and angels descends from the heavens, while a radiant divine light breaks through the clouds, signifying the saint’s imminent reception into paradise. Particularly notable is the inclusion of a sailing vessel at right, an allusion to Xavier’s extraordinary maritime journeys across the Portuguese trading empire. The ship serves both as a biographical reference and a symbol of missionary evangelisation across distant seas. At the upper right appears a striking triangle enclosing an eye, commonly known as the Eye of Providence. While most famously associated today with later Enlightenment and Masonic imagery, the symbol had an established Christian meaning in Baroque religious art. The triangle represents the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—while the all-seeing eye signifies God’s omniscience and divine presence. Here, rays of light emanate from the symbol, directing heavenly attention toward the dying saint and reinforcing the theme of divine favor and salvation. Its presence suggests a sophisticated theological program, linking Xavier’s missionary vocation to God’s providential oversight of the world. Executed in the dramatic devotional style characteristic of the Counter-Reformation, the composition combines earthly suffering with celestial glory, reflecting the Jesuit emphasis on vivid religious imagery designed to inspire piety and contemplation. The painting’s rich iconography, atmospheric palette, and rare inclusion of the Eye of Providence make it a compelling example of seventeenth-century Catholic devotional art and Jesuit visual culture. An unique depiction, and a splendid addition to any discerning art collection. A powerful film inspired by Xavier's journey is Silence (2016), directed by Martin Scorsese. Based on Shūsaku Endō's novel, it vividly portrays the hardships, faith, and persecution faced by Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan, offering a compelling cinematic companion to Xavier's story. ⦿ Dimensions (approx.): 56 x 69 cm (artwork), 66 x 79 cm (incl. frame/total). ⦿ Condition: Exhibits an authentic patina of age (see pictures): strip lined, revarnished, retouches, repaired spots and tears, aging craquelure. ⦿ Estimated Period: late 17th century. ⦿ Please note: Frame included gratis: no warranty. ⦿ Shipping: Fast dispatch ✓ Tracked ✓ Insured ✓ Eco-friendly ✓ – Dispatched from Germany, or local (free coffee:)) pick-up available.
