All auctions / Miscellaneous / Eugène Baudin - Vase - Earthenware - Art Nouveau Flambé Glaze

Rare matching pair of French Art Nouveau miniature vases attributed to Eugène Baudin, dating to circa 1900. These two small sculptural vessels are characteristic of the experimental French Art Nouveau ceramics associated with Eugène Baudin. Both vases are individually signed “Baudin” on the underside, and both retain their original decorative metal mounts. The ceramic bodies are finished in expressive flambé / flowing glazes, combining deep cobalt-blue, turquoise and rose-red tones. The highly reactive surface creates a subtle transition of colour and depth across the rounded forms, while the organic metalwork follows the natural contours of the vessels. The pair is particularly appealing because of its small scale, matching form, original mounts and signatures on both pieces. Comparable Baudin works are documented with flambé, oxblood, turquoise and violet glazes and with original metal mountings, including bronze and pewter-type mounts. The present pair is offered as a matching collector's set, suitable for an Art Nouveau, Jugendstil or French decorative-arts collection. They can be displayed together as originally intended or individually as small cabinet pieces. Attribution & Period Artist: Eugène Baudin Origin: France Period: circa 1900 Style: French Art Nouveau Material: Glazed stoneware / art pottery with original metal mounts Glaze: Flambé / flowing glaze Marks: “Baudin” incised on the underside of both vases Mounts: Original decorative pewter-type metal mounts Baudin is documented as an important French ceramic artist whose work is particularly associated with experimental glazes and expressive Art Nouveau forms. His ceramics were exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 and at the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. Dimensions: Height: approximately 11.5 cm / 4.53 in each Please note that the two vases are a matching pair but are individually handmade, so minor variations between the two pieces are part of their character. Condition: Very good antique collector's condition. Both ceramic bodies are structurally sound. No chips to the neck rims No cracks or hairlines No restoration Both original signatures remain clearly legible The original metal mounts are present on both vases The flambé glaze remains rich and visually striking Condition notes: One vase has pronounced underglaze crazing, clearly visible in the photographs. The crazing is beneath the glaze; the surface remains smooth and stable. The other vase has one small, old chip to the unglazed lower base ring, with naturally softened edges. This chip does not extend into the decorated glazed body and does not affect the signature. Both vases show some surface rubbing and light marks around the lower areas, consistent with contact with the original metal mountings. These areas are smooth to the touch. There are no structural repairs or restorations. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition report. Collector's Note: This is a particularly attractive example of early French Art Nouveau ceramic work, combining experimental glaze effects with sculptural form and original metal mounting. The pair is offered as found, without alteration or restoration, preserving the character and materials of the period.
