This 1584 Lyon edition of Eucharius Rösslin’s Des divers travaux et enfantemens des femmes, published by Benoît Rigaud, is a significant illustrated work in the history of obstetrics and early modern medical printing. Rösslin’s treatise, originally published in the early sixteenth century, became one of the most influential manuals on pregnancy and childbirth in Europe. This in-16 edition is illustrated with 21 woodcut engravings within the text, providing a valuable visual dimension to the discussion of childbirth, anatomy, and obstetrical practice. The combination of medical instruction and contemporary woodcut illustration makes the volume an important document of Renaissance approaches to women’s health and reproduction. Complete with 144 leaves (288 pages). The copy is bound in later full marbled calf, with a smooth decorated spine and a red morocco lettering-piece. It bears the stamp of the library of Dr. Robert Fournie, indicating a later provenance associated with a medical collection. The volume consequently possesses interest not only as an early printed medical text but also as an example of the collecting and preservation of historical medical literature. Its compact format and illustrated pages are characteristic of practical medical books intended to circulate among learned and professional readers during the Renaissance. The copy has, however, experienced some wear and restoration. The binding is rubbed, with the upper headcap lacking, while a partially erased ex-libris remains on the front pastedown. The first and final leaves show small holes and losses, some of which have been partially restored.
