17th-Century Viceregal School Title: Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus and the Blooming Rod Attribution: Hispano-American Viceregal School (Circle of the earliest colonial workshops) Period / Era: 17th Century (Baroque Era / Golden Age) Technique: Oil on canvas Measurements: 50 x 40 cm (canvas only) Support: Early 17th-century linen/hemp canvas. The reverse shows an old structural consolidation work (white ground layer and horizontal patch) aimed at stabilizing and protecting the 1300s-dated fabric from prior tears. Wooden stretcher. Frame: Exceptional original 17th-century frame, purely Baroque Viceregal in style. Made of finely carved noble wood with substantial high-relief moldings and over-gilded with period gold leaf. Shows a historic patina of enormous aesthetic value. Perimeter-adapted to this painting. Condition: Good. The 17th-century pictorial layer is stable with deep, noble craquelure due to natural aging. Reverse restored. The 17th-century frame remains robust, preserving its original gilding with slight wear and localized gaps that attest to its more than 300 years of age. Description and Academic Justification (17th Century) Devotional painting for a domestic altarpiece executed in the 17th century, a peak period when Saint Joseph was named principal patron of the Americas. The work depicts the Saint in frontal planes holding the Child Jesus (clad in a flesh-toned tunic) and bearing the miraculous blooming rod. The formal justification for cataloging it as 17th-century lies in the primitive use of naturalistic chiaroscuro, strongly influenced by early 17th-century European tenebrism. Unlike 18th-century art (more luminous, Rococo and serial), viceregal works of the 17th century stand out for their densely shadowed backgrounds from which figures emerge by powerful directional light, sculpting faces with almond-shaped dark gazes and a severe, theatrical mystical anointing. The sumptuous 17th-century frame, with its characteristic Baroque volumetry designed to shine under candlelight, perfectly envelops the provenance and historical importance of the canvas.
