Escuela Italiana (XVII-XVIII) - La Visitación de la Virgen María a Santa Isabel

Title: The Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Saint Elizabeth ㅤ School: European Baroque School (18th century) ㅤ Style: Religious Baroque with Italian and Spanish influences ㅤ Technique: Oil on canvas ㅤ State: Condition in accordance with its age. It presents restorations, darkening of the pictorial surface, signs of aging and wear typical of the passage of time. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: ㅤ The work is inscribed in the tradition of European Baroque religious painting of the 18th century, maintaining an evident continuity with the compositional and iconographic models developed during the 17th century. Its pictorial language shows influences from the Italian and Spanish schools, especially in the monumental treatment of the figures, the narrative organization of the scene, and the use of light-dark contrasts to accentuate its spiritual meaning. ㅤ Affinities with the tradition of Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) and Jacopo Bassano (1510-1592) are recognized, particularly in the arrangement of the characters within architectural spaces and in the use of garments in vivid colors. Likewise, the contained expressiveness of the female figures and the treatment of the garments recall compositional solutions spread by the Bologna school, especially in the artistic environment of Guido Reni (1575-1642) and Francesco Albani (1578-1660). ㅤ The composition also reflects the influence of Baroque naturalism and devotional painting of the Counter-Reformation, whose aesthetics continued to develop during the 18th century in numerous European workshops. The theatricality of the space, the balance of the figures and the directed lighting are characteristic elements of this tradition. ㅤ These relationships should be understood as stylistic and iconographic references, not implying a direct attribution to the mentioned artists. ㅤ The painting represents an interpretation of the biblical episode of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Saint Elizabeth, narrated in the Gospel of Luke (1, 39-56). This event describes the meeting between Mary, pregnant with Jesus, and her relative Elizabeth, who awaited the birth of John the Baptist, constituting one of the most representative episodes of the Marian iconographic cycle. ㅤ In the center of the composition appear two female figures embracing affectionately, identifiable iconographically as the Virgin Mary and Saint Elizabeth. Mary, on the left, wears a pink-toned tunic covered by a wide deep blue mantle, whose drapery descends to the ground. Saint Elizabeth, on the right, is clad in reddish and ochre garments, accompanied by a clear veil that partially covers her head. ㅤ The encounter between the two women forms the emotional and narrative core of the scene. Their interlaced hands and the proximity of their faces convey affection, spiritual recognition, and religious solemnity. The arrangement of their bodies creates an enveloping movement that directs attention toward the center of the composition. ㅤ To the left appears a male figure dressed in a bluish tunic and a wide golden mantle, holding a staff. This character could represent Saint Joseph or an attendant of the Virgin during her journey. His dynamic pose and the movement of the garments introduce depth and contribute to the narrative development. ㅤ In the second plane, to the right, another older male figure is distinguished, represented inside an architectural space. This character could be identified as Zechariah, husband of Elizabeth and father of John the Baptist, whose presence is consistent with the traditional iconography of the Visitation. ㅤ The scene unfolds in a monumental architectural interior, defined by walls, classical elements, and structures that organize spatial depth. In the central background, a sculpture on a pedestal stands out, while on the far right a broad red curtain partially frames the scene and reinforces its Baroque theatricality. ㅤ The lighting concentrates mainly on the main figures, whose faces, hands, and garments emerge from a predominantly dark environment. The contrast between deep blues, warm reds, and golden tones provides chromatic richness and helps establish a clear visual hierarchy. ㅤ The painting technique combines relatively meticulous treatment of the anatomies with a freer execution of the fabrics and architectural elements. The folds of the garments show transitions of light and shadow that reinforce the sense of volume and movement. ㅤ The composition stands out for its narrative structure, the contained expressiveness of the characters, and the balance between architectural monumentality and spiritual intimacy. These elements reflect the continuity of religious Baroque models in 18th-century European painting. ㅤ Observations: ㅤ Old 18th-century work showing restorations and signs of aging in keeping with its age. Surface darkening, possible varnish alterations, chromatic irregularities, and wear of the pictorial layer are observed. ㅤ Iconographic identification as “The Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Saint Elizabeth” is proposed based on the composition and the depicted figures. The attribution to the European Baroque school of the 18th century corresponds to the cataloging provided and does not constitute a specific attribution of authorship. ㅤ The work is presented without a frame. ㅤ The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such a case, we will need photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority. ㅤ Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to factors such as being outside a continental territory, excess dimensions, or weight of the item. PremiArt will not cover this surcharge. ㅤ The courier that must cross the Swiss border can be much slower than normal, so, if possible, to speed up the process, we will provide the customs number that is holding the shipment so the customer can release it and have it reach its destination. Experience has shown that this is the most effective solution for both parties. ㅤ Due to the high volume of shipments, orders may be delayed by more than three days, for which we apologize and appreciate your patience. If you have any questions about your order, please contact us via internal message. ㅤ Dimensions: 44.5 × 68 cm
