Title: Portrait of a Gentleman ㅤ School: Italian School (18th-19th centuries) ㅤ Style: Neoclassicism ㅤ Technique: Pastel on paper ㅤ Condition: Condition of conservation appropriate to its age. It shows a small loss and restorations. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: The work is inscribed in the Italian portraiture tradition developed at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in a context of transition from the late academic models of the 1700s toward neoclassical sobriety. The delicate treatment of the face, the attention given to the expression, and the use of a monochrome range of warm tones recall the practice of academic drawing and of portraiture executed with sanguine and pastel, techniques especially valued for studies of character and intimate representations. ㅤ Male bust portrait depicting a mature gentleman, slightly tilted and with his gaze directed downward. The subject features abundant wavy hair, a beard and mustache, elements worked through meticulous drawing and soft tonal gradations. The introspective expression and the restrained modeling of the face confer a pronounced psychological character to the composition. ㅤ The execution concentrates especially on the features, the hair, and the beard, while the clothing appears treated in a lighter, more sketchlike manner. The predominance of ochre and reddish tones over the light paper background creates a softly visual image, close to the academic studies done with sanguine or pastel during the period. ㅤ The work is presented with a gilded molded wooden frame of classic and sober profile.
