Title: The Doctor School: Italian (17th–18th centuries) Style: Baroque – genre painting with a naturalistic character Technique: Oil on canvas Circle / artistic influence: Work linked by its compositional approach to the realm of Italian genre painting of the Baroque tradition, with influences from Caravaggist naturalism and from popular representations developed during the 17th and 18th centuries. The use of a dark background, the light focused on faces and hands, and the strongly narrative character of the figures recall a tenebrist and folk-tradition. The scene also relates to depictions of doctors, surgeons, and popular healers frequently seen in European Baroque painting. Interesting genre scene starring a group of characters gathered around a medical intervention. In the foreground, a man dressed in a blue coat firmly holds the leg of another character while manipulating his foot, concentrating the main action of the composition. Around him appear several figures watching the procedure intently, their expressions markedly individualized. On the table in the lower left area are various containers, bottles, and tools related to medical practice, reinforcing the narrative character of the scene. The representation seems to allude to a surgical or podiatric intervention carried out in a commonplace, popular setting. The composition is built through intense chiaroscuro, causing faces, hands, and certain areas of the garments to emerge from a predominantly dark background. The tones of blue, reddish, ochre, and earth colors provide chromatic contrast and help direct the viewer’s gaze toward the protagonists. The expressive treatment of the faces, the interest in popular types, and the direct depiction of a daily activity place the work within the tradition of Baroque genre painting, combining naturalistic and tenebrist elements with a clear interest in narration. Condition Due to its age, the work shows restorations, as well as possible signs of aging and wear compatible with its chronology. It is recommended to closely examine the photographs to assess its conservation state.
