Ernestine

Special vintage ceramic set from the Italian Ernestine, consisting of four bowls and one large presentation plate. The five pieces are individually executed with different floral decorations in soft pink, purple, blue, yellow, and green tones. The combination of the different floral motifs makes this set particularly attractive: each piece has its own character, while color use, shape and decoration style clearly form a cohesive whole. On the undersides there are various handwritten factory and decoration marks, including Ernestine, Salerno and Italy, as well as numbers such as 161, 172 and 177 B. On one of the pieces there is also an indication of hand decoration visible. Ernestine was a leading ceramics manufacturer in Salerno, Italy, founded in 1948 by architect Matteo D'Agostino and American designer Ernestine Virden Cannon, who led the artistic direction. The production became especially well known in the United States. In 1950, ceramics from the factory were even exhibited at the Italian arts and crafts exhibition in the Brooklyn Museum. The manufactury remained active until 1968. The refined botanical decorations and the free, almost watercolor-like drawing style are particularly representative of modern Italian ceramics from the mid-20th century.
