Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso – Iridescent bowl, ‘A Grosse Costolature’ series, with signature engraved with a point, (c. 1970-1980) – Murano, Italy. DESCRIPTION A sculptural bowl in Murano art glass, designed by Ercole Barovier (1889–1974) for Barovier & Toso, signed and part of the ‘A Grosse Costolature’ series. The piece is crafted from remarkably thick glass, with an intensely iridescent surface. It features a radial composition of ten ribs, which extend from the body of the bowl towards the rim, flaring out evenly to create a silhouette of great sculptural power. The Italian name ‘A Grosse Costolature’ refers precisely to these large, raised ribs, a distinctive feature of this series. COLOR & IRIDESCENCE Its iridescent green hue deserves a special mention: compared to the numerous transparent, colourless or white/pearly iridescent specimens that have been documented, this intense green variant is notably less common. The complex iridescence, with flashes of green, blue, violet and gold, causes the colour to shift with the light, giving the piece a particularly unique presence. Added to this chromatic uniqueness is the engraved signature, which is a key element in attributing the piece to the historic Murano glassworks and another of its distinctive features. The gentle undulations of the rim, together with the technical and chromatic richness and the weight of the glass, give this bowl a visual presence that transcends its utilitarian function. Owing to its small size, considerable thickness, striking presence and iridescent finish, it should be regarded primarily as a piece of artistic glass and a collector’s item, rather than as a vessel for everyday use. In itself, it reflects the formal language and experimentation developed by Barovier & Toso in their artistic production of Murano glass during this period, where technical tradition is combined with a marked quest for new forms and surface effects. AUTHENTICITY: Engraved signature on the base: “Barovier & Toso / Murano” DATE: The ‘A Grosse Costolature’ series is documented as part of Ercole Barovier’s period of experimentation with organically inspired forms and iridescent glass treatments. The documentation consulted places this production between 1938 and 1942, whilst various examples are catalogued as dating from around 1940–1942. Based on its formal and material characteristics, the piece is dated to c. 1970-1980. DIMENSIONS Diameter: 12 cm Height: 5 cm Maximum height to the apex of the lobes: 6 cm CONDITION: In very good condition. The piece is intact, with all ten lobes and edges preserved, and shows no breaks, losses or chips. Fine superficial linear marks are visible on the base, mainly around the contact area. Given their appearance and distribution, they do not appear to be the result of impact damage and do not affect the structural integrity of the glass or the piece’s aesthetic appeal.
