Made by Spink & Son in London in 1897. Rectangular with plain and raised base; cover raised with overhanging plain rim. Paneled with chased filigree-style leafing scroll ornament on stippled ground. On sides, coat of arms for the Worshipful Company of Grocers, which was founded in the twelfth century originally to control the purity of spices and drugs before coming to be associated with wholesale activity (that is, “in gross”). On cover top, cast finial in form of camel, an allusion to the past mode of haulage. It’s a popular company motif that was also congruent with the late Empire. In 1882, Egypt was occupied by the British military, eventually becoming a British protectorate, a situation that lasted until 1922. Fully marked. Very good condition. Dimensions: H 2 3/4 x W 4 x D 2 in. Weight: 5.4 troy ounces. #CE226
