Englebert Fisen (1655-1733)

Englebert Fisen (1655-1733)

- Oil on canvas. Stretched canvas. Impeccable condition. Identification plaque on the frame. Inscription with date and age of the portrayed. - Englebert Fisen (Liège, 1655-1733), the principal exponent of the Liège school of painting in the 17th century, is remembered mainly for his vast religious compositions and grand altarpieces, in which he fused the suntuosity of Italian Baroque —after his Rome apprenticeship with Carlo Maratta— with the technical sobriety of the Flemish tradition. However, his foray into portraiture, though more restrained, reveals singular mastery and exquisite sensitivity, as testified by this masterful portrait of the young professed Cathérine de Fleron, painted in 1694. The canvas captures Cathérine de Fleron, affectionately nicknamed "Lambinon" on the reverse of the panel according to an inscription from the period, at the age of twenty. Rather than yielding to the ostentation usual in Baroque high-noble portraiture, Fisen opts for a composition of astonishing simplicity and anointing. The young Liège nun presents herself in the white and black habit, delicately holding a prayer book, a symbol of her vocation and contemplative life. Fisen’s genius shines in the portrayal of the young woman’s character. Cathérine possesses a serene, deep, and honest gaze, free of artifices, projecting circumspect and exemplary devotion. It is a portrait of spirit more than of flesh; the painter succeeds in capturing not only the features of the professed nun, but the uprightness of her soul and her mystical commitment, elevating the Liège dame as an emblem of virtue and piety of the local 17th-century nobility. The clarity of the stroke, the precision in the folds of the habit, and the restrained atmosphere demonstrate Fisen’s ability to find the highest artistic expression through economy of means and psychological sobriety. - Image dimensions without frame: 68.5 x 79 cm / 86.5 x 98.5 cm with exclusive custom frame.
