EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE (EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY), Untitled (My Country), 1994

EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE (EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY) Anmatyerre language, 1910 - 1996 Untitled (My Country), 1994 acrylic on canvas 38.5 x 31 cm; 41.5 x 34 cm (framed) bears inscription verso: EMILY KNGWARREYE, Feb 94, Rodney Gooch, MBA 12-294; University of the Sunshine Coast exhibition label PROVENANCE Mulga Bore Artists (Rodney Gooch), Northern Territory, Cat No. 12-294 Utopia Art, Sydney, New South Wales Private Collection, New South Wales EXHIBITED Genesis of a Collection, Art from the Harding Family Collection, 2 May - 6 June 2002, University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Art Leven, Sydney Contemporary, 3-6 September 2026, Sydney, New South Wales Painted in February 1994 at Utopia in Central Australia, this work by Emily Kame Kngwarreye (Emily Kam Kngwarray) reflects her profound connection to Alhalker, her ancestral Country, and the cultural knowledge she held as a senior Anmatyerre woman. For Kngwarreye, painting was an expression of Country in its entirety, encompassing the land, plants, animals, seasonal transformations and ancestral stories that shaped her life. Rather than depicting the landscape from a conventional perspective, her paintings evoke its interconnected elements, expressing Country as a living, changing environment sustained by ancestral knowledge and ceremony. By 1994, Kngwarreye had developed an extraordinary freedom and confidence in her painting practice. Her increasingly expressive compositions moved beyond the intricate dotting of her earlier works towards a more spontaneous and intuitive visual language. Through colour, rhythm and the movement of her brush, she conveyed the vitality of Country and the seasonal cycles of growth, abundance and renewal. This painting speaks to the encompassing nature of Kngwarreye's artistic vision. Her paintings were never concerned with a single feature of the landscape but with the complex relationships between its physical, spiritual and cultural dimensions. As she famously described the breadth of her subject matter: "Whole lot, that's whole lot." © Emily Kam Kngwarray / Copyright Agency, 2026
