Beautiful and large artwork "Southern view with gypsies on donkey" (South view with gypsies on an donkey) – oil on canvas – Emile Gastemans (1883–1956), Belgian school, Antwerp The painting shows a characteristic southern family, travelling with donkeys on a mountain path, a beloved and recognizable theme from Gastemans' oeuvre after his travels to southern Spain. A young woman walks at the front and leads a laden donkey, followed by a mother with child and her husband on a donkey. The artwork evokes the atmosphere of "The Flight into Egypt", a well-known Biblical story in which Joseph, with Mary and the infant Jesus, flees to Egypt. In the background there is a wide panorama visible with a southern town and a bright blue sky. With a loose, light-impressionistic brush and a warm color palette of bright blue, ocher and soft earth tones, Gastemans masterfully captures the sun-drenched Mediterranean atmosphere. The canvas is fitted with a fitting silver-colored frame with a beautiful vintage patina. The painting is in good, authentic condition with a light, characteristic craquelure that fits the age of the canvas. An extremely atmospheric and collectible work from the southern period of this well-known Belgian master, lower left signed in red "E. Gastemans" and verso authentically marked with "E.
