The color of emerald, whose range spans from a dark bluish-green to a pale yellow-green, is caused by small trace amounts of chromium (Cr3+) and vanadium ions (V3+). Like the pure mineral beryl, emerald crystallizes in a hexagonal system and typically forms six-sided, prism-like to columnar crystals with a glassy luster on the surfaces.
