The color of emerald, whose range of variation extends from a dark blue-green to a light yellow-green, is caused by small trace amounts of chromium (Cr3+) and vanadium ions (V3+). As the pure mineral beryllium, emerald crystallizes in the hexagonal system and usually develops six-sided, prismatic to columnar crystals with a glassy luster on the surfaces.
