(*) Ellsworth Kelly, an American sculptor and painter, has been one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and one of the leading exponents of Hard Edge, a painting movement focused on creating abstract painting with abrupt transitions between color areas. Thanks to his chromatic experiments, Ellsworth Kelly has left behind an extensive body of work in which geometric painting vibrates and gains strength from bright, intense colors on neutral backgrounds, sharp contours, irregular three-dimensional panels, and even multi-panel works. "I realized that I didn’t want to compose images but to find them," Ellsworth Kelly. Kelly was born in 1923 in Newburgh, New York. He studied art at the Pratt Institute. In 1943, he went to Europe after being drafted by the United States Army. His stay lasted six years, and Paris was the city that most influenced his development as an artist. After returning to the United States, he studied painting in Boston, at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. There he decided to do something different from what was being taught at the time. He discovered Kandinsky and fell in love with color and geometric forms. Research into perception drew Kelly’s interest, and his experiments produced works that challenge space as the viewer was accustomed to. Although he did not adhere to any particular artistic movement, Kelly’s work is associated with influences from Minimalism, Pop Art, Color Field, and above all Hard Edge. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. His work is also part of various public collections including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the Tate Modern in London.
