Canadian. An Eli Croft antler gun rack with masterfully carved figures of a dog and eagle protruding from a branch on each side, with entwined snakes. In the middle of the antler is another carved dog head with fine detail. A small compartment with a sliding cover is found at the top, and another smaller compartment is at the base. The carvings are all in the original dry, crazed varnish surface, while the backboard and compartment lid are adorned with brass tacks. Eli Croft was a local prospector and constant whittler who created gun racks, crooked knives, walking sticks, and even folky furniture and free-standing figures. Very few examples of his work have survived. Ex. collection Chris Huntington. Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. 1900-1935. Unmarked.
