Berlin in the days of the German Empire: imagine a busy street where the new electric streetcars glide squeakily along their metal rails. Elegant, well-groomed gentlemen stride quickly past the shop window displays. Occasionally a lady in clacking French heels walks by, fashionably dressed in a walking suit, wearing gloves and a large hat with her hair pinned up. On quieter days, the passers-by can hear the splashing of the Spree Canal. Here, on the Gertrauden Bridge, there is an imposing neo-Gothic house, behind which a church tower stretches up into the blue sky and chimes on the hour. It is the Juwel-Palais, the Jewel Palace – then the business premises of the jeweller Wilhelm Müller, which can still be found in Gertraudenstraße today. The present necklace was created for his range, as a hallmark on the back shows. With his wide range of products, Müller catered to the various tastes and requirements that a Berlin lady of the imperial era might have for her jewellery. The necklace was created for elegant evening events, soirées, concerts and hotel dinners. Its fine finish in platinum on gold and the gallant design with bows as a nod to the age of Marie Antoinette are typical of the years around 1910. Two pendants of unequal length are suspended below the bow motif, making the piece of jewellery a so-called "negligé" necklace. The proverbial highlights of the necklace are fine, white diamonds in the old cut typical of the time. The necklace is in very good condition. We discovered it in Nuremberg.
