Elegant Cocktail Ring with Opal and Diamonds in White Gold, c. 1975

One of the most effective ways to showcase a large colored stone, and a true classic in the field of vintage jewellery, is the cluster ring. Set in a halo of white diamonds, the effect of the centrally set colored stone is enhanced. In the second half of the 20th century in particular, white gold was often used for this purpose, as it takes a back seat in terms of color and allows the gemstones to come to the fore. This is just such a ring. In the middle of the ring is a high-quality Australian full opal in an elongated oval cabochon cut, which is interspersed with vivid color reflections. Neon green, peach and even pink reflections dance against the bright, bluish background, with splashes of electric blue in between. A ring of fine diamonds surrounds the opal. The sixteen brilliant-cut diamonds weigh a total of 0.64 ct and are all white in color. The arrangement of the diamonds, in which the largest stones are arranged along the axes, is a subtle yet effective trick. This gives the design a dynamic tension without compromising the harmonious design. The ring was created around 1975 and is in excellent condition. Not only is the combination of materials typical of the time, but also the gallery undercut of white gold struts and the shape of the ring band. An independent gemological appraisal confirms the fine quality of the gemstones.
