C. 1925, the bow was one of the most popular motifs in international jewellery. As a symbol of lightness, elegance, and formal attire, it appears in ever-changing variations—sometimes rendered in a naturalistic, fluid style, and at other times, as in this brooch, condensed into a more abstract composition of curved surfaces and clean contours. The ribbon of the brooch is cut from satin-finished rock crystal. Its finely engraved lines, which shimmer thanks to a matte finish, are reminiscent of the folds of a precious, translucent silk ribbon. The crystal surfaces are framed by a total of 72 old-cut diamonds. With a total weight of approximately 1.80 carats and their delicate white colour, they trace the flowing silhouette of the ribbon on both sides like sparkling hems. At the center, a natural Oriental pearl measuring approximately 7.0 millimeters in diameter forms the knot. Its soft luster provides a charming contrast to the crystalline appearance of the rock crystal and the fire of the diamonds. The use of only different shades of white lends the brooch that refined, almost monochromatic elegance that characterizes the festive jewellery of the Belle Époque. Its craftsmanship also follows the tradition of high-quality diamond jewellery: the supporting structure is made of 14-karat gold, while the visible side is crafted in silver. The light-colored metal makes the diamonds appear to blend together, reinforcing the impression of a ribbon bow resting almost weightlessly on the garment. Thus, the brooch combines the playful beauty of a tied bow with the opulent richness of materials and the refined goldsmithing c. 1925. This exquisite brooch came to us here in Berlin.
