This precious pendant is almost a song: an ode to the beauty of geometry and a celebration of the artistry and grace of the goldsmithing of the past. The design is divided into two parts. At the top, we see a loose arrangement of geometric shapes: rectangles and circles, all crafted from platinum and set with sparkling diamonds, lead the two ends of the delicate chain toward the center, setting the tone. Attached to it, suspended from another small diamond, is the large, sparkling pendant. It, too, is crafted from platinum and set entirely with diamonds. A wide frame forms a square turned on its point. Larger diamonds adorn the corners. Within this are two further frames, composed of diamonds individually set in platinum—the first still square, the second already round—and in the center shines yet another wonderful old-cut diamond. A total of 4.50 ct of diamonds are set here. The absence of any historical ornamentation underscores the modernity of the design. The guiding principles were geometry and the desire to create platinum frames, settings, and bars of such astonishingly fine craftsmanship that the necklace appears to be made of pure light. This style of jewellery—featuring large pendants, sometimes round, sometimes rectangular, made entirely of platinum and rendered in the finest, lace-like structures—was all the rage in the years leading up to World War I. Here, however, the design takes on a new character thanks to the wider frames and, above all, the basic geometric shapes arranged so loosely at the top. The garlands and laurel leaves typically found in such pieces are absent, and one can already sense a foreshadowing of Art Deco. We therefore date the necklace to a slightly later period, around 1915. Yet as delicate and elegant as the design is, it is also perfectly preserved, sturdy, and just waiting to be worn and admired once again. We discovered the pendant in Vienna.
