All auctions / Jewelry & Gems / Elegant Art Deco Brooch with Diamonds in Platinum & Gold, c. 1925

For all pieces of jewellery in elegant monochrome, the goal is to create the most striking interplay of light and shadow on the surfaces possible, allowing for reflections and luster. A popular stylistic element among jewelry designers of the past was therefore the “shadow joint.” This delicate saw-cut work is a favorite feature of large ring faces, flat brooches, and pendants from the early 20th century, enriching the overall impression of each piece without ever resorting to colourful hues. This Art Deco brooch derives its striking appearance from the brilliance of its diamonds and the subtle interplay of light and shadow created by the finely saw-cut engraving. The effect is especially pronounced against dark fabrics. At the centre, three old-cut diamonds are mounted in geometric platinum settings, lending the composition both radiance and refined symmetry. The back of the piece of jewellery is crafted from 14-karat gold. According to the hallmark, the brooch was made in Germany. We discovered it in Amsterdam.
