Among all types of jewellery, the brooch is perhaps the piece that offers the designer the greatest freedom. Hardly any consideration needs to be given to wearability here – quite unlike with a ring. Form, size, and colour are virtually without limits. It is therefore no surprise that so many great jewellery designers, such as René Lalique or Jean Schlumberger, became famous precisely for their brooches. Here we are presented with a true feast for the eyes, taking us right into the years of transition at the beginning of the 20th century. We see an elegantly elongated bar with a front of white gold. In the centre, the bar widens to reveal three sparkling old-cut diamonds, set between two shimmering pearls. Small rose-cut diamonds and glittering millegriffes further enliven the design. This is a fine piece of workmanship that relies on the monochromy of different white tones in the materials. The warm white of the gold contrasts beautifully with the creamy white of the pearls and the cool brilliance of the diamonds. The differing shades act like variations on a theme and yet harmonise wonderfully together. The diamonds, judging by their cuts, were most likely repurposed from an earlier piece – a tribute, perhaps, to the economically challenging times. The design of the brooch follows the so-called “bar pin” type, which first became popular around 1900 and remained in vogue well into the Art Deco period. The brooch is an exceptionally elegant addition to any wardrobe – we found it most appealing in both design and execution.
