Today, when we think of a brooch, we usually think of a jewel that is worn under the shoulder for the sole purpose of adornment. But this was not always the case: Especially in the years around 1900, so-called "pins", also known in German as "Ansteck-, Stab- oder Sicherheitsnadeln", proved to be as pretty as they were useful. Jewellery catalogues offered such elongated brooches in countless variations. In 1904, the Deutsche Goldschmiedezeitung, in an article called Der Schmuck als Geschenk, praised the usefulness of such pins: "The safety pin, as the smallest, most delicate toilet piece [...] is needed in all forms for a lady's toilet. Who even suspects the limit of usability of such needle? They are necessary for tie loops and ties, for jabots and collars, in larger form for belts, skirt and jacket closures, for gathering up wide sleeves [...]." The present brooch is such a delicate piece of jewellery, which even today can hold together a silk scarf, decorate a collar or hat, or even quite classically the lapel. The lines of the pin meet in the center and swing out to frame a small natural pearl. Intense emerald green calibré cut glass pastes shine alongside diamond roses. With its modern-looking composition, the pin already subtly points ahead to the coming Art Deco. The fine piece of jewellery is in excellent condition. We were able to discover it in Westphalia.
