Dutch Art Deco plant stand / pedestal – dark oak – c. 1920–1930 A particularly characterful tall plant stand from the Dutch Art Deco period, presumably made around 1920–1930. The slender, architectural form, dark wood color and sober decorative details give this piece an look that closely aligns with Dutch Art Deco and the Amsterdam School. Similar Dutch plant stands from the 1920s are typically made of oak and are described as Art Deco as well as Amsterdam School. Characteristic are the tall, slim construction, geometric composition and its use as a pedestal for plants, ceramics or sculptures. This piece has a square top with four long, slightly protruding legs. Directly under the top there is a wide wooden framing that is finished at the corners with decorative brass-colored knob-like heads. These small metal accents form a pleasing contrast with the deep dark-brown wood. Also notable is the construction at the bottom. The legs are connected by crossbars and between them sits a decoratively applied wooden element, fastened with metal knob-heads and finished with a toothed edge. This gives the otherwise sober design just enough ornament to give the furniture its typical early-20th-century character. The elongated proportions make the table excellent as a plant stand, pedestal or plinth.
