Bogtman worked from 1915 in his uncle Willem Bogtman’s glass workshop in Haarlem. He then worked in the decorative arts workshop that was founded in 1917 by his father, Cornelis Bogtman, in Hilversum. The family workshop became best known for batik-covered wooden furniture and other utilitarian objects such as storage boxes, bookends, clocks and bowls in the Amsterdam School style. Other materials used included textile, glass, Eternit, metal, earthenware and celluloid. Bogtman also made ceramics in Denmark, where he died in 1969. Around 1935 the workshop closed. Louis Bogtman began performing in domestic and international venues under the name Laurens Bogtman from 1932 as an oratorio and art song singer.
