signed 'EDOUARD CORTES' l.l., oil on board, 16.5 x 22cm; framed 30 x 35cm, With Haynes Fine Art of Broadway, Worcestershire. Édouard Léon Cortès was a French Post-Impressionist painter best known for his atmospheric depictions of Paris. He fell in love with the French capital after living and growing up nearby, and established a favourable reputation for himself in Paris by his late teens. Although a pacifist, Cortès joined the French army at the age of 32, serving as a contract agent. After sustaining a bayonet wound, he was evacuated to a military hospital. Following his recovery, he was assigned to a staff position where he was able to put his artistic abilities to great effect by sketching maps of energy positions. Cortès’s ability to capture Paris in all its changing conditions led contemporaries to describe his work as 'poetry in painting'. In 'Place Vendôme', the square becomes a lively evening scene with rain-darkened streets reflecting the surrounding lights as figures from Parisian bourgeois society move through the bustle of city life. Known for his peaceful and humble nature, he avoided publicity and preferred to remain anonymous at exhibitions. He died in Lagny-sur-Marne, the town where he had grown up, in 1969.
