An huge, original poster for the 1904 Ghent Municipal Festival (Gemeentefeest van de Stad Gent), designed by Edmond De Maertelaere and Franz Poelvoorde. 260 cm x 145 cm Belgium - 1904 Ghent Municipal Festival in July 1904. Poster in beautiful Belle Époque / Art Nouveau style featuring intricate floral patterns and fluid lines. A standard-bearer on a white horse alongside a young woman holding a garland of roses. This poster is a direct ancestor of today's 'Gentse Feesten'. Edmond De Maertelaere (1876–1938), a well-known Ghent-based painter collabhorated with Franz Poelvoorde on the design and lithography for this specific festival poster. Edmond De Maertelaere was a highly respected local artist who later designed other prominent posters, including ones for the Ghent Floralies and the 1913 World's Fair in Ghent. This poster was printed by F. Meyer-Van Loo, located in Ghent. In fair condition. Clear traces of age and use. There is a small tear at almost every fold junction, more serious in some places than others. The paper of this poster is very brittle. The poster should be unfolded carefully.
