EDGAR ALLAN POE - THE COMPLÈTE POETICAL WORKS - 1919

EDGAR ALLAN POE - THE COMPLÈTE POETICAL WORKS - 1919

The Complete Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe, with Three Essays on Poetry, in the Oxford Edition of 1919, edited by R. Brimley Johnson and published by Humphrey Milford – Oxford University Press. [LX]. 316 , p Book in excellent condition, nothing particular to report. The book allows following the development of Poe's poetry through his juvenile collections, The Raven and Other Poems, and the works published subsequently. It includes, among others, The Raven, Annabel Lee, Ulalume, The Bells, Eldorado and A Dream within a Dream. There are also alternative versions of some poems, useful for observing the author's revisions. The three essays on poetry are: * The Poetic Principle — about the aim and nature of poetry. * The Philosophy of Composition — on the construction of a poetic work, with particular reference to The Raven. * The Rationale of Verse — devoted to rhythm and versification. The collection also includes an introductory biography (Memoir), bibliography, textual notes, and an index of the first lines. Its interest is therefore also critical and documentary. Edgar Allan Poe Born in Boston on January 19, 1809 and died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, Poe was a poet, storyteller, critic, and magazine editor. His life was marked by financial difficulties and losses, including the death of his wife Virginia in 1847. He is a central figure of American literature: he contributed to the shaping of the modern short story, horror fiction, and the detective tale. Among his best-known works are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. In poetry, themes of loss, memory, beauty, and unease recur, with particular attention to sound and rhythm. His influence reached European literature, especially through Baudelaire and the French Symbolists. The Editor Reginald Brimley Johnson (1867–1932) is the editor responsible indicated on the title page. His contribution consists in preparing the texts from the original editions and in adding biography, notes, and bibliography: elements that make this volume useful for study as well as for reading.
