Ed van der Kooy (1956) - China Town

Medium: mixed media on cardboard Dating: 2004 Numbered: N/A / original work Signed: with white ink on the underside Dimensions: 17 x 17 cm (image size) and 50 x 50 cm (in passe-partout) Condition: In very good condition Titled: Chinatown. The Hague-based painter Ed van der Kooy uses his adventurous journeys through Asia as a theme for his colorful paintings. In particular, through the culture of the mountainous nation Nepal, where he has been visiting almost annually since 1978, he is strongly influenced. Here the painter received from the then Nepalese king Mahendra the honorable commission to paint his daughter. In addition to the direct depiction of people he meets during his travels, Ed van der Kooy portrays Westerners surrounded by a completely different Eastern culture. With great love of detail he shows the alienation, which appears very dramatic and theatrical. He finds his models in his circle of friends. Sometimes colleagues are gladly willing to take on a role in his paintings. Especially the beautiful Eastern garments testify to his precise way of working and the many hours of painting he devotes to each canvas.
