The work represents an elderly ecclesiastic, half-length portrait, dressed in sober black attire. Notably the small black skullcap that covers the head and the distinctive white rabat with two bands stand out, elements closely linked to the dress of the French clergy during the 19th century and which reasonably allow proposing a French origin for the painting. The subject holds in his hands a book with a reddish binding, a feature that reinforces his intellectual and religious status and could allude to study, teaching or the Scriptures.
