All auctions / Miscellaneous / École du Pérou (XIX) - La jeune Vierge Marie filant la laine
- Oil and gold pigments on canvas. Canvas lined. - The pictorial subject of “The Virgin Mary Spinning the Wool” — often linked to representations of the Virgin of the Milk or the Holy Family in Nazareth’s workshop — carries a profound theological and symbolic charge that transcends the seeming domestic ordinaryness. In Christian iconography, the act of spinning wool or flax not only extols the virtues of diligence, chastity, and humility associated with the Marian feminine ideal, but also functions as a prophetic metaphor of the Incarnation and the Passion: the threads woven by Mary’s hands symbolize the human flesh with which she clothes the Divine Word in her womb, while the act of spinning anticipates Christ’s fate, whose body will be given and whose seamless tunic will be cast lot for on Calvary. Great exponents of European art, from Italian Renaissance masters and Primitive Flemish painters to the Baroque sensibility of Francisco de Zurbarán, immortalized this scene, endowing it with an atmosphere of mystical reverence where every everyday object — the spindle, the distaff, the shears, or the sewing basket — hides a sacred reading. In the viceroyal Hispanic-American world, especially in the workshops of the Cusqueña School and the Viceroyalty of New Spain, this iconography acquired capital importance and extraordinary devotion. For evangelizing religious orders, the image of the Virgin spinning became a fundamental pedagogical and moralizing tool, intended to shape the conduct of Indigenous and Criollo women in convents and homes under the premises of contemplation and pious labor. Viceroyal painters adopted the European model but enriched it with their own sensibility, clothing the Virgin in rich gold brocades, local flowers, and a melancholy tenderness that is very characteristic; in this way, they transformed a complex theological dogma into a close, devotional print, consolidating the spinning Virgin as a pillar of the religious imagination and of the visual identity of the American continent during the 17th and 18th centuries. - Image dimensions without frame: 25.5 x 40.5 cm / 32 x 48 cm with exclusive custom frame.
