The pictorial surface with abundant impasto and localized craquelure. 2. Description Important floral composition executed in 1929, in the midst of the European avant-garde and the artistic milieu around Paris during the interwar period. The work depicts a large bouquet of flowers arranged frontally on a dark background, built with a particularly free, rich, and textured painting. Chrysanthemums, roses and other flowers appear resolved through vigorous, rapid brushstrokes loaded with pigment, moving away from the academic floral tradition to approach a modern sensibility in which color, matter, and gesture acquire as much importance as the representation of the subject. The composition stands out for the intensity of its whites, pinks, crimsons, reds, and yellows, which emerge powerfully over a dark base of bluish, grayish, and greenish tones. 3. Stylistic and compositional analysis From a stylistic point of view, the work relates to the European painting environment of the 1920s and 1930s, especially to certain trends developed around the so-called École de Paris. It is not a school in the strict academic sense, but a broad international context formed by French and foreign artists settled or connected with Paris, where post-impressionist, expressionist, and other currents of figurative modernity coexisted. The execution of this painting presents precisely several elements coherent with that environment: - the brushstroke remains deliberately visible; - the pigment reaches notable thickness in many areas; - the flower is built through color patches and gestures rather than meticulous preparatory drawing; - and the background is resolved through broad pictorial sweeps that emphasize the bouquet’s luminosity. Particularly interesting are the large white chrysanthemums in the center, whose forms are created by true reliefs of paint. In the pinkish and reddish flowers, the brush describes arches and rapid movements that convey a strong sense of vitality. The composition is organized as a large expansive floral mass. The luminous center acts as a visual nucleus and from it the colors extend toward the edges through yellows, pinks, reds, and greens. 4. Sensory and expressive dimension More than a botanical representation, the painting proposes an experience essentially chromatic and sensory. The accumulation of flowers practically eliminates empty space and turns the bouquet into a pulsating surface of material. The whites and yellows function as light focal points, while the reds, pinks, and crimsons introduce depth and energy. The dark background further enhances the contrast. The painting possesses an almost tactile quality: in the foreground it is clearly visible how the artist deposits, drags, and superimposes pigment, leaving visible the very process of execution. This technical freedom places the work far from the conventional academic still life and within a fully modern sensibility. 5. Signature and authorship hypothesis The work appears signed and dated 1929 in the lower right corner. The signature is mechanically present but its script is difficult to interpret. The initial letters seem to allow different readings, none of which has been securely related to a specific artist to date. For this reason, the work is prudently offered as: Unidentified author – European School / surroundings of the École de Paris, 1929. The quality of execution, the chronology, and the pictorial language make it advisable to keep the authorship investigation open. In late 1920s Paris, numerous French and foreign painters who are currently present in the international market worked, some of them known precisely for still lifes and floral compositions with strong material character. However, no concrete attribution is proposed, and any future identification should be supported by appropriate documentary and paleographic comparison of the signature. 6. Other points of interest The date 1929 is particularly interesting from a historical-artistic standpoint. The work is set in a moment of enormous richness for European painting: the first vanguards had definitively transformed the relationship with color and form, while many artists continued working within a modern figuration based on the contributions of post-impressionism, fauvism, and expressionism. The reverse also preserves old notes related to the work and its date. The painting stands out especially for its considerable material richness, visible in the pigment accumulations of the petals and in the chromatic superpositions. The frame, a gilded and dark wood with carved decoration, complements the work’s character particularly well. 7. Shipping and conditions The work will be shipped by a professional specialized company, using high-protection packaging, a custom-made box, and foam protections to guarantee maximum safety during transport. We ship internationally to all destinations. Shipping outside the European Union, certain international destinations, or pieces requiring special packaging may incur additional transport, customs, or import costs, which will be borne by the buyer.
