Magnificent oil painting belonging to the European animalist school of the late 19th century – early 20th century, depicting a cow indoors in a stable. This is a work of extremely high pictorial quality, both for the security of its execution and for the magnificent treatment of the animal, the true absolute protagonist of the composition. The figure almost entirely occupies the pictorial space and is represented with remarkable monumentality, highlighting the solidity of its anatomy and the richness with which the coat and the different light areas are resolved. The painting is fully within the important European animalist and naturalist tradition, a genre that reached special development during the 19th century and that made domestic and work animals subjects in their own right. One of the most outstanding aspects of the work is its extraordinarily free, confident brushwork rich in substance. The artist builds the animal’s body with broad color touches and visible impasto, alternating deep blacks, browns, ochres and creams. The light areas of the coat are resolved with brushstrokes loaded with material that generate volume and contrast powerfully with the darker areas. Equally notable is the treatment of the head, resolved with special attention to expression and the essential details of the physiognomy. The manger and the vegetal elements placed on the right, along with the straw spread across the floor, contextualize the scene without detracting from the animal’s prominence. The restrained lighting of the interior of the stable creates an intimate and deeply naturalistic atmosphere. The backgrounds, deliberately dark and sober, allow the illuminated areas of the cow’s body to emerge with particular intensity, generating an attractive chiaroscuro play. The result is a painting of great plastic force and exceptional presence, in which the apparent spontaneity of the brushstroke coexists with a solid understanding of anatomy and volume. An especially noteworthy work within the animalist genre for its execution quality, material richness and painterly character. School: European animalism. Chronology: late 19th – early 20th century.
