Early Period Ban Chiang Pottery Urn with Handles & Incised Motifs

Early Period Ban Chiang Pottery Urn with Handles & Incised Motifs

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, Early Period. A tall pottery urn with a flared rim, tapering body, and low foot. Three loop handles are set on the body, two below the rim and one near the base on the opposite side, likely for suspending or carrying the vessel with cord. Impressed bands encircle the rim and neck, and the midsection is incised with curvilinear swirl motifs filled with fine impressed texture. The lower body is textured overall. Incised and impressed wares of this type are among the earliest Ban Chiang ceramics, predating the better-known red-on-buff painted pottery. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205645
