Southeast Asia, Indonesia, South Sumatra, Kauer people. A petite woman's baju jacket: handwoven exterior with stripes in indigo, ochre, red, and purple, with metallic thread highlights, and a printed red cotton interior lining. The front bib is densely embroidered and set with cermuk, small mica micro-mirrors, whose reflective shimmer was believed to deflect misfortune. Borders of stitched shells frame the neckline and hem, marking status and prosperity. The back panel is a fine supplementary-weft brocade known as songket, with shimmering metallic threads. Such jackets formed part of a bride's ceremonial dress, signaling her rank during marriage and communal rites Item # 203652
